This course is for anyone who is expecting to manage financial resources, interpret financial data and interact with accountants. It demystifies the language of the accountant and provides an understanding of accounts including financial statements and budgets.
You will study
* The terminology of the accountant
* The basic principles of accounting
* Financial statements and their elements
* Simple accounts preparation
* Analysis and interpretation of financial statements using key ratios and other methods
* Key budgets and budget preparation
* Analysis of actual vs budget and the major causes of differences
* Performance measurement
* Regulatory and legal burdens
By the end of the course you will be knowledgable in:
Accountancy terminology and principles
The preparation and presentation of financial and management accounting information and the use of this information for corporate decision-making purposes
The issues that affect financial statements and budgets
The use of financial statement analysis in various decision-making contexts
The regulatory burdens of small vs large organisations in areas such as taxation, company law, audit, corporate governance and ethics
The importance of financial management skills for all types of organisations and common sources of finance
Conduct research and demonstrate critical thinking, analysis and synthesis skills.
Be able to express complex financial ideas fluently and comprehensively at a strategic level, and develop arguments.
Tutor
Wyn Innes is an experienced businessman, who has worked in the Public and the Private sector in senior and challenging positions. He is also a visiting lecturer at Newport Business School. Wyn is a qualified Chartered Accountant, who trained with Grant Thornton in Cardiff before spending 8 years in London working with Price Waterhouse, Leo Burnett and then CIA (UK) Holdings where he was Finance Director in a £2.1bn Media Group. Wyn moved back to Cardiff in 1997 when he was appointed Managing Director of S4C Commercial and Chief Executive Officer of SDN. In 2005 Wyn formed Greenfield Media, a Wales Hot 100 Company before forming Orchard Media and Events Group after a merger. He left Orchard in March 2012 to form Green Meadow Media, a business advisory company.
