Bat Night @ Parc Cwm Darran
See bats and moths in the moonlight at Parc Cwm Darran on Saturday 21st May from 8pm until 10pm. Wales International Documentary Film Festival (WIDF) @ Blackwood Miners’ Institute
The first Wales International Documentary Film Festival (WIDF) comes to Blackwood on Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th May. Over the three days, Blackwood will be taken over by film makers from around the globe. More than 50 films will be screened at the Blackwood Miners’ Institute, the newly refurbished Maxine Cinema and throughout pop up venues along the High Street. Networking events, masterclasses and training programmes will also be on offer for attendees to enjoy and participate. Cai Howells, Festival Co-Ordinator, said: WIDF offers a unique opportunity for local people to attend a world-class film festival which will showcase an array of documentary films, masterclasses, performances and parties. On Thursday 12th May, WIDF will host a large ‘Pathways’ event which will feature presentations and representatives from many of the major media training providers and employers in South Wales and beyond, ‘Pathways’ aims to inspire young people by giving them the vital information and connections that are the key to unlocking their potential and fulfilling their aspirations. Caerphilly residents are able to gain free day passes to watch the release of the documentary ‘Candidate‘. The film focuses on a residents’ association on a social housing estate, along with the challenges the locals face. A film discussion will take place after the screening, where residents have the chance to give their valued feedback. Please be aware, all events held at the Blackwood Miners’ Institute and the Maxine Cinema, are on a first -come, first- served basis. Caerphilly Business Forum @ The Celt Experience
Join Caerphilly Business Forum at The Celt Experience for a brewery tour and sampling session. “With a home-brewing background from an age that was a bit naughty, beer sommelier Tom Newman, born of Welsh blood, gave up his day job in 2003 to take brewing seriously… well, as seriously as Tom can get anyway. Tom worked as a trainee at Butcome brewery as a 17 year old in 1992, but began his commercial exploration from his dad’s garage in 2003. Tom learnt quickly by trial and error but was blessed with some good fortune along the way, like being able to buy up the majority of the sadly defunct Smile’s kit in Bristol. Soon after creating Newman’s, Tom decided to let it go quietly into the night and returned to his ancestral roots by launching the Celt brand, which consisted of Celt Golden, Bronze and Bleddyn. Originally, all organically brewed, Tom found himself hampered by organic ingredients in an ever expanding craft beer landscape and decided to start experimenting with all kinds of malts and hops and in 2011, he dropped the organic mantra and the brewery has gone from strength to strength and has welcomed the addition of the on-going Shapeshifter series of collaboration brews, as well as the high ABV Ogham series to the roster. In 2013 Cell Rebirth was launched by the team at Celt to explore the use of indigenous yeast and bacteria to develop Welsh farmhouse beers using local produce.
