Get home safe with Cab Safe
The Christmas party season is in full swing, and Caerphilly County Borough Council and Gwent Police are keen to encourage party goers to make sure they get home safely at the end of their night out by only using a licensed taxi. Cab Safe is a well established joint initiative between Gwent Police and local authorities in the area, which allows people to obtain up to three phone numbers of licensed taxi companies in the area from which they are texting. Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said, “Ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors to our county borough is of course always a priority, and Cab Safe ensures that people help themselves by putting their safety first when it comes to travelling home after a night out. It offers peace of mind to those who find themselves without a taxi, giving them easy access to fully licensed and regulated taxi companies for a safe journey home”. He continued, “It is so important to only use the services of fully licensed taxis – and I would encourage those who are in any doubt at all to make use of this scheme, and help ensure that this festive period is not only a very enjoyable time, but also a very safe time for all”. Centenary of mining disaster commemorated
The centenary of the 1913 Universal Colliery mining disaster in Senghenydd, which resulted in the loss of lives of 440 men and boys, has been commemorated today (Monday 14th October) with the unveiling of the Wales National Mining Memorial. The memorial, which is dedicated to all miners who lost their lives in mining disasters across the country, was officially unveiled earlier today by BBC Radio Wales personality and Patron of the Aber Valley Heritage Group Roy Noble, together with Chair of the Aber Valley Heritage Group, Jack Humphreys. The First Minister, Carwyn Jones, was also present at the ceremony to lay a wreath at the memorial. Residents of Senghenydd and surrounding areas turned out in their thousands to witness the unveiling of the memorial, which marked the 100 year anniversary of the worst ever British mining disaster, when 440 men and boys were killed in a mining disaster at the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd on 14th October 1913. Free school breakfast clubs
Free Breakfast Clubs have been introduced in many Primary Schools in Caerphilly in accordance with Welsh Assembly Guidance. Breakfast has long been recognised as the most important meal of the day and evidence suggests that children who have the opportunity to eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast prior to the start of the school day are more likely to achieve their full educational potential. The Welsh Assembly Government made a commitment to provide for all children of primary school age registered in maintained primary schools in Wales to have a free breakfast. All breakfasts offered should be healthy and consistent with the Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative guidance. The breakfast offered should include a choice of four food groups: – Milk-based drinks or products Cereals – these can be whole-wheat biscuits, corn flakes, rice based cereal, shredded wholegrain wheat biscuits, malted wheat squares, bran flakes, or porridge. None of these options must be sugar coated. Fruit – this can be a selection of chopped fresh fruit or dried fruit to add to the cereals, fruit canned in natural fruit juice, or unsweetened fruit juices. Breads served with low fat spread and reduced sugar jams and marmalade. Children should be provided with the option of having one item from each of the four food groups. Local Businesses – be part of the Caerphilly 10k
As you may be aware we are hosting Caerphilly’s first ever 10k which will be taking place on Sunday 23rd June. As the organisers Caerphilly Council’s Business Enterprise Support Team and Sports Development Team are very excited about the event and want to ensure that it is one to remember for the participants. We would like to make Caerphilly 10k an annual event and therefore want runners to remember the great day they had by taking part in a fantastic road run through the streets of Caerphilly, as well as remembering the gifts received after the run. We are approaching local businesses to see if they would like to be part of the event by entering a team into the race but also on this occasion we would like to gauge interest in providing products for the goodie bags. Do you have an product that you feel would be suitable to be included in the goodie bag? We will require approximately 1,200 of the products and we will need them by 10th June to ensure all bags can be packed ready for the event. It is time again to nominate your local heroes for the recognition they deserve with the Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards 2013! The annual award ceremony is organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council and GAVO and rewards local volunteers for their contribution to the community. The categories for this year’s Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards are: Young Volunteer of the Year – Sponsored by Gwent Police and open to individual volunteers aged 25 and under Record Breaking Volunteer – Longest service as an individual volunteer Environmental Volunteer – An individual or group of volunteers who have contributed to improving their environment Fundraising Volunteer – Focuses on the method used to fundraise, rather than specifically the amount of money raised Employer Supported Volunteer – Individual or group of volunteers who via their employers encouragement and support have contributed to the well-being of the community. Inspirational Volunteer – A person with learning or physical disabilities who, in being an inspirational volunteer, has contributed to the wellbeing of the community Retired Senior Volunteer – Open to individual volunteers aged 60 and over Practical Service Adult Volunteer (Individual) Practical Service Adult Volunteer (Group) – Individuals/groups who have provided service to improve the quality of life for another person or for the community New Volunteer – An individual who is new to voluntary work (within the last eighteen months) The closing date for all applications is Friday 26th April 2013 – all individual and group volunteers must carry out their voluntary work within Caerphilly county borough. Get Caerphilly online has now helped 2,500 people
Get Caerphilly Online is a partnership between existing initiatives supported by the Welsh Government Communities 2.0 programme, Caerphilly Borough Council and Get IT Together. The project aims to pull down barriers of digital exclusion to make sure that people from all walks of life and ages can benefit from the internet. Whether its sending a first email, signing up to the latest social media platforms such as Facebook to talk to a long lost aunty in Australia, setting up online banking or making the first online purchase. More and more services are now being pushed online instead of receiving paper statements and the government is also pushing it’s services such as benefits and job matching so it is important that people feel confident using a computer and the internet so the Get Caerphilly online helps complete novices and also refresher courses for intermediate users with drop in sessions at local libraries. The campaign has recently benefited from the support of volunteers and is keen to recruit more to develop more opportunities across the borough and to become a digital champion for the area. MMR Vaccination Clinics – Saturday 13th April
Two MMR vaccination clinics are being held by Aneurin Bevan Health Board on Saturday 13th April in response to the recent measles outbreak in the Swansea area. The purpose is to help protect people living in Gwent from measles. The clinics in Newport and Ystrad Mynach will target those between the age of 1 year + and 25 years of age, and in particular we are keen to vaccinate people in the 16 – 25 age group. It is crucial that young people are vaccinated prior to the school and college exam season. Measles is an extremely contagious virus, which can lead to serious complications and in rare cases can be fatal. We urge all parents to ensure their child has had their MMR vaccinations and encourage people in the above age groups who are unprotected to attend one of these drop in clinics. People who have had two doses of the MMR will be 99% protected against the disease. GPs will be continuing to vaccinate regularly and if you already have an appointment with your GP please keep this and do not attend these additional clinics, extra clinics will be also held in other areas in Gwent over the coming weeks. Please do not attend if you have felt recently unwell with a temperature or other flu like symptoms.
