SENGHENYDD MEMORIAL CONCERT
Monday 14th October will mark the 100th anniversary of the Senghenydd Mining Disaster which killed 440 people in the UK’s worst ever mining tragedy. Join Boyd Clack, Mark Llewelyn Evans, Dan and Laura Curtis, Jamie Pugh, SERIN, Tom Crow and the Caerphilly Community Chorus and Children’s Choir for this special concert in aid of the Welsh National Mining Memorial. Tour of Britain
Exciting news for cycling fans… The prestigious Tour of Britain cycle race will return to Caerphilly for a third time in 2013 on Thursday 19th September for the finale to Stage 5 of the tour. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Tour of Britain organisers are hoping to make this year’s race the best yet with a record number of teams taking part, which will see 114 of the Worlds best riders battling 8 challenging stages between the 15th and 22nd September. Stage 5 will see riders depart from Machnylleth at 11am on a testing 177km course through the length of Wales, to its finale in Caerphilly, which is set to be the most challenging part of the Welsh element of the tour. Estimated Arrival Times The tour is expected to enter the county borough between 2.20pm – 3pm with its arrival in Deri and will then make the descent to Caerphilly passing Bargoed (2.24pm – 3.06pm) and then through Glan Y Nant & Tir-y-Berth (2.28pm – 2.51pm) before embarking on the Yodel Sprint through Ystrad Mynach (2.34pm – 3.19pm) and then onto Llanbradach (2.36pm – 3.21pm). Riders will enter Caerphilly at Pontygwindy Road (2.41pm – 3.27pm) making their ascent against the flow of traffic up Cardiff Road, embarking on the first testing ‘Skoda King of the Mountains’ climb up Caerphilly Mountain (2.43pm – 3.30pm). BBC Cymru Wales has revealed a star-studded line-up for BBC Proms In The Park 2013, which takes place on Saturday, September 7th in Caerphilly. West End singing stars John Owen Jones and Sophie Evans will be joined on stage by trumpet soloist Alison Balsom, all of them accompanied by BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales under the baton of Grant Llewellyn at the open-air event supported by Caerphilly County Borough Council. Celebrating the Last Night of the Proms along with parks across the UK, the event held at Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields is themes ‘A Night at the Musicals’. Carmarthenshire-born West End and Broadway actor John Owen Jones, known for his outstanding lead roles in Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera will be joined by Tonypandy’s Sophie Evans, who has moved on from her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz to delight audiences around the country during her national tour. Alison Balsom – recently nominated for Gramophone Artist of the Year 2013 and described as one of the world’s finest trumpeters – will be performing fresh new arrangements for trumpet and orchestra of well-known and much loved songs from stage and screen. Tim Rhys-Evans and Connie Fisher will co-present this year’s Prom bringing the summer festivities to a close. Meet The Buyer Event – Bargoed Cinema Development on Thursday 8th August 2013
Caerphilly County Borough Council in conjunction with Business Wales (Welsh Government) are holding a Meet the Buyer Event to engage with the five relevant Contractors that have been selected to the Invitation to Tender stage for the forthcoming contract opportunity associated with the Bargoed Cinema Development. The Authority has invited experienced contractors to tender for the construction of a multiplex Cinema on Colliers Walk, Bargoed, Caerphilly. The project includes for the provision of cinema shell construction with internal cinema fit out, highway access road and associated car parking facilities, foul and surface water drainage supplies (including on site attenuation), kerbing, footway works and permeable paving, high ball and spectator rail fencing, earthworks excavation incorporating remediation treatment of known ground contamination and associated infrastructure services and connections. Also included in the works are street lighting and floodlighting provision, masonry walling, hard landscaping and other miscellaneous accommodation works, together with all other associated ancillary works. Caerphilly County Borough Council has agreed Heads of Terms with Odeon Cinema Operator and secured a budget of circa GBP 6,000,000.000 million to deliver a state-of-the -art Multiplex Cinema at Bargoed. Set on a 0.27ha site, the Multiplex Cinema will house 5 screens providing seating for 857 users. It will also house a Costa Coffee and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream offer. The Multiplex Cinema will be designed and built to the highest standards of quality and environmental performance. Blackwood Summer Festival June 29th & 30th 2013
Last year our second summer festival was held in Blackwood High Street. Traders, funfair rides, music, dance and children’s costumed characters all took to the high street delivering a fun packed family themed event, which attracted thousands of visitors. Due to its success it’s back again for 2013 but this year it’s bigger and better. Children and the young at heart will be descending on the town centre to meet up with some of TV’s most popular characters. Thrown into the mix will be some high quality children’s funfair rides, music, street entertainment, food and craft stalls as well as Punch and Judy, children’s workshops and face painting.

Charity walk and funday with Ruth Jones, star of “Stella” and Gavin and Stacey’s “Nessa”
Welsh TV star Ruth Jones who is most recently known for her the main character in hit comedy Stella and previously as Nessa in Gavin and Stacey is set to lead the charity one mile walk in in of the “Lullaby Trust” to raise awareness and funds for Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID). The charity walk is set to start off 11am on Saturday 11th May from the Fly in Bedwas with Ruth being on hand to sign autographs and have pictures taken from 10am. The charity walk will then be followed by live entertainment including games, toy stalls, a barbecue and performances from the young street dance world champions from Ebbw Vale, Kemistry, Louise Hall, one of Wales’ top female vocalists, and contributions from many other professional artists. The charity was set up by Allison Hall in memory of her son that she lost suddenly 24 years ago. Tickets for the event will cost £4 with proceeds going to the Lullaby Trust and it is hoped that this years event will smash last year’s £6,000 raised for the charity with £1,200 being raised already in last weeks charity bike ride.
