Christmas high street campaign is back!
Shoppers on Caerphilly county borough’s high streets are in for a real festive treat once again this year, as the council’s Town Centre Management Team joins forces with local retailers to unveil their ever-popular voucher booklet, featuring over 110 in-store discounts and offers. Back for 2016, the voucher booklet this Christmas promises to be the biggest and best yet, with a total of 112 offers from retailers in Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Risca and Ystrad Mynach. Download Voucher Booklet (Pupils from Risca Primary School) The council’s well-established ‘Choose the High Street‘ campaign focuses on raising awareness of consumer choice, and aims to encourage people to support their local high streets more often – particularly during in the pre-Christmas trading period which is crucial to businesses. It also highlights the diverse retail offer contained in our town centres. Ghostly Goings-on in Llancaiach Fawr Manor
Creeks and squeaks, thumps and bumps… these were some of the sounds heard when the Working Women’s Network visited Llancaiach Fawr last week. A group of 15 ladies embarked on a ‘fright night’ network meeting at one of Wales’s most haunted houses. Equipped with torches and EMF (electromagnetic field strength) meters the group enjoyed an hour of fear in the dark 16th century manor house. Two of the Llancaiach Fawr staff members, Louise and Sarah told tales of ghostly sightings and experiences as the group travelled from room to haunted room. The EMF meters were especially active during the tour which could indicate that the ladies were not alone! After the tour, Llancaiach Fawr’s General Manager, Diane Walker gave a fascinating talk on her experiences being a female manager in a mans world and the ups and downs of running an all female management team at Llancaiach Fawr. Start-up grant gives new Caerphilly business a boost
A new business in Caerphilly county borough has recently received start-up support thanks to Caerphilly County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise. Specialist recruitment business Profession Direct Ltd has been awarded a start-up grant, as well as business support from Caerphilly County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise, allowing the new business to purchase IT equipment and marketing materials. Profession Direct Ltd is a specialist recruitment business which offers recruitment, training and consultancy services. Simon Hughes, Managing Director of Profession Direct said: Profession Direct Ltd was formed out of the wish to capitalise on the demand for professional recruitment services in the specialist professions of financial services, medical, education, legal and estate agents, as well as utilities and energy. Thank you to Caerphilly County Borough Council and UK Steel Enterprise for the start-up support that they have provided, which has given our new business a firm foundation to build on. Annual Brian Mayo Golf Day in aid of Meningitis Now – 2016
Every year Bryn Meadows Golf, Hotel & Spa hold a golfing tournament with the aim of raising funds for national charity Meningitis Now, with this year’s taking place on Thursday 8th September. The Brian Mayo Golf Day is held annually at Bryn Meadows Golf Hotel & Spa. The event was first hosted in 1989 when the original proprietor of the resort, Mr Brian Mayo lost both of his legs from contracting Meningitis. It was an unusual ritual that led to Mr Mayo contracting Meningitis and it is believed that he contracted the virus after licking a golf ball contaminated by weed killer. He was back on the golf course six weeks after leaving hospital, using his Mercedes as a golf cart. This year’s event is a full house, with all holes on the golf course covered and local companies donating gifts and auction items for those taking part. The teams will arrive for breakfast rolls on Thursday 8th September, ready to start at 11am with a shotgun start. Afterwards there is a BBQ in Winners Bar, followed by the auction, prize giving and entertainment. Mr Mayo died in 1999, but his family the owners of Bryn Meadows, still carry on the tournament in his memory. His wife Mrs Fay Mayo said: He was in a coma for 11 days and then woke up. Matthew Bevan Community Regeneration Co-ordinator from Caerphilly CBC explained: We run basic “First Click” courses across the borough and also on occasions run more advanced Agored Level 2 accredited courses in Internet & Email, Word & Excel. As part of the project we also run a drop in sessions every Friday, Digital Fridays, at 7 libraries across the borough. This is for any help with computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets. We have staff or volunteers at each venue to help people and you can be sure of a warm welcome. Pokémon Choose the High Street
Caerphilly’s town centres have joined the Pokémon craze, with the council’s Town Centre Management team encouraging people playing the new Pokémon Go game to visit their local town centre in order to find ‘PokéStops‘ and ‘Pokémon Gyms‘. The popular game which has become a global phenomenon, uses mapping technology to show players where they can find ‘PokéStops‘ and ‘Pokémon Gyms‘ at famous landmarks, churches, buildings and statues – making town centres great places for players to visit, both to play the game but to enjoy the town centre while they are there too. The Town Centre Management team are also calling on local businesses to make use of the unique opportunity to engage with players who are using town centres to search for Pokémon. Shops located near ‘PokéStops‘ could advertise this in their shop windows, and café owners could create space for players to sit and play the game (and even offer phone recharging facilities) and offer small discounts on refreshments to players. With a new trading update due to be added to the game, the future promises even more opportunities for businesses to increase the time budding ‘Pokémon trainers‘ spend in local town centres.
